Fly Investation Removal

There are around 5500 species of Fly within the UK and treatments vary for each species. Malum Pest Management have years of experience dealing with Fly’s, such as Fly Control & Management within refuse tips and material recovery centres. We have detailed some of the most common Flies we are asked to deal with below.

Cluster Fly

The Cluster Fly is slightly larger than the House Fly and is non-metallic dark grey in colour. The thorax has distinctive gold hairs without stripes.
Cluster Fly come into contact with humans when, one by one, they enter roof voids and rooms within houses during autumn searching for suitable crevices in which to hibernate. Large numbers of Cluster Fly can accumulate in a small area which can cause distress. Cluster Flies emerge from hibernation in the spring. Their droppings cause staining to windows and curtains and if a large number has congregated there is often a sickly sweet smell that accompanies them.

House Fly

6 – 7 millimetres long with a wingspan of 13 – 15 mm. The thorax is grey with four dark longitudinal stripes. The abdomen has two pale sides and a darker central band. The Housefly tends to take a direct path from one point to another. The Lesser Housefly often circles in a jerky motion around lights.

The Housefly is cosmopolitan and has been described as one of the most dangerous insects to man because it can spread disease like summer diarrhoea, typhoid and dysentery. Flies also transport the eggs of parasitic worms, which they have picked up whilst feeding on faeces.

Blow Fly

This family includes Greenbottles and the Bluebottles. Both are large, bristly, metallic coloured flies that sometimes make a bussing sound as they fly. Despite the names, the colour can not always be used to tell the species apart. Instead, the patterns of bristles on their backs are used for identification.
Blowflies deposit their eggs on animal carcasses, meat, fish or faecal matter. Some species also lay eggs in or around the wounds of living animals, where the larvae van hatch and feed on the damged tissue. The adults sense of smell is well developed and they will fly long distances to a rotting carcass.

Fruit Fly

There are about 50 species of Fruit Fly found in the UK, but they are similar so precise identification is not required. Fruit Flies are about 3mm long and have bright red eyes, a brown head and thorax and a darker abdomen.

They are not cosmopolitan and found where fruit, vegetables, beer, wine and similar materials are allowed to ferment or rot.

Filter Flies

There are around 80 species of Filter Fly within the UK, often referred to as Moth Fly, Drain Fly, Sewage Fly or Filter Fly. Filter Flies are easily recognisable by their hairy wings that are held roof like abve the body when at rest. They are small flies, around 2mm, and have a mottled grey and white colouration.

Filter Flies are extreamly common on the filter beds found within sewage treatment works where they feed on the gelatinous slime growing on the rocky structure.

Outside sewage treatment works they can be found anywhere where sediment accumulates, or water stagnates, e.g. drains or beneath the feet of industrial equipment

Achieving control of flies

The first step in any control programme is the identification of the species of fly involved. This will confirm whether the flies are as a result of a hygiene problem or whether they are simply entering the premises as casual intruders searching for warmth and shelter.
