Flea Control in Hampshire, West Sussex and Dorset
Fleas have existed on earth for around one hundred and eighty million years and are extremely well adapted for their life as ectoparasites (parasites that live outside the bodies of other organisms).
Fleas most commonly encountered by humans within their homes are either a Cat Flea or Dog Flea. The life cycle for both species are relatively the same and so precise identification is not required for treatment.
The Cat Flea is the more widespread species and despite its name is found on both cats and dogs and occasionally rats and foxes.
The Dog Flea is most commonly found on dogs and can also be found parasitising on rabbits.
Fleas are renowned for their ability to jump using their strong muscular hind legs. They can jump up to thirty centimetres high, which may not sound impressive, but man’s equivalent would be jumping onto a skyscraper.
Achieving Control of Fleas
- Remove all moveable objects from floor areas
- Vacuum all floors, wall floor junctions, sofas and pet bedding.
- Immediately dispose of hoover bag to an outside bin when finished hoovering. Vacuuming removes some live Fleas and also organic matter which reduces food source available to the larvae.
- All pets must be removed from property. If fish or exotic pets are present, then all tanks must be covered, and air pumps turned off and lifted from the floor.
